AIM
Aquaponics is the method of combining aquaculture and hydroponics to grow both fish and vegetables in the same system.
With more emphasis being placed on sustainable practices, aquaponics is a great way of producing healthy food with significantly less water usage and without the need for fertilisers.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Anyone interested in setting up a home or commercial system.
CONTENT
System components and design, water quality monitoring and maintenance, fish selection, handling and health, growout systems, profitability and potential pitfalls of aquaponics, commercial systems, greenhouse designs and low energy systems.
A tour of one of the largest hatcheries in Australia is included and people wanting to purchase and take away Barramundi or Black Bream fingerlings may be possible.
OUTCOMES
A good understanding of how to build, monitor and maintain your own aquaponics system . Understanding of the possible benefits and pitfalls of growing plants and fish together. All achieved through a combination of hands on experience, lectures and visiting other aquaponics systems around Perth that have already been set up.
ASSESSMENT
There is no formal assessment for this course.
FURTHER TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
This course is an introduction to both aquaculture and horticulture. Those who want further study may wish to enrol in the certificates of Aquaculture or Horticulture being offered by Challenger Institute of Technology.

Resource requirements:
- Enclosed footware must be worn for this class. No thongs or open sandals
permitted
- External visits to outside venues is included in this course - A bus will
be supplied for transport purposes to and from these venues at no extra cost.
