Bridge Resource Management / BRM / MRM
MaritimeS5409
AIM
Analysis of accidents/incidents has shown that a large number of dangerous ship board situations arise due to poor management skills, rather than technical skills. To overcome these issues, The Swedish Club joined hands with six other Maritime Organisations and SAS Flight Academy to develop the Bridge Resource Management (BRM) course.
The Maritime Resource Management (MRM) Course is a further development of the original SAS Bridge Resource Management Course; it is more inclusive of the entire vessel.
Maritime Resource Management is defined as the use and co-ordination of all the skills, knowledge, experiences and resources available to the crew to accomplish or achieve the goals of safety and efficiency.
The course is designed minimise risk of incidents by favouring good personal
communication, excellence in leadership skills and compliance with operating
procedures. Challenger Institute is an accredited training establishment to run the MRM course
on behalf of The Swedish Club. It includes the principles regarding BRM as
outlined in Section B-VIII/2, part 3-1 of the STCW Code.
