WATERWISE GARDEN COURSE

A JOINT PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN CHALLENGER INSTITUTE AND THE WATER CORPORATION

Western Australia has been gripped by climate change. To plan for WA's future water management and ensure there will be enough water for all, we need to minimise our environmental impact by using less water.

For a number of years the water Corporation and the Horticulture Industry of WA have worked together to promote the efficient use of water in garden and irrigation design. Challenger Institute of Technology trains a significant number of apprentices and trades people entering landscaping, turf management, amenity horticulture, irrigation and gardening industry.

Objectives
The objective of the course will be to gain a generalised understanding of waterwise best practice. Students can put into action in the workplace and the community these sustainable waterwise principles and practices. The course will cover soil and irrigation theory and practical as well as effective gardening techniques and waterwise concepts including; garden design, plant selection, soil preparation, hydrozoning, mulching, and irrigation considerations.

On completion of the training students will achieve a nationally recognised unit of competence that can be credited towards further study including a Certificate III in Horticulture.

This training course is endorsed by the Water Corporation and will be a prerequisite to participate in the Corporation’s Waterwise Programs.

Please be aware that there is a take-home assignment associated with the course. The assignment must be completed in order for:

  • Students to receive nationally recognised accreditation for the unit of competence. This unit can then be credited towards further study including a Certificate III in Horticulture.
  • The Water Corporation and Challenger Institute of Technology to award the Waterwise Certificate.

Students will have three weeks to complete the assignment.
