English as a Second Language (ESL)
IMPROVE ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS
The ESL courses are for adult migrants who want to improve their Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening skills, for life and work in the Australian community. These courses run in Fremantle, Mandurah and Rockingham, and can be taken full-time or part-time. Some campuses offer evening classes, including IELTS in Fremantle when there are enough students.
There are 3 Certificate levels. Each Certificate takes one year (2 semesters) full time to complete. Students must successfully complete 8 units - core reading, writing, speaking and listening units, and a variety of electives such as computing, health and medicine, math and Australian history.
Each semester is 17 weeks. The timetable fits in with school hours and holidays, and allows time for part-time work. Full-time attendance is about 14 hours / week. Certificate I is for beginners. Certificate II develops good basic skills. Certificate III gives students the minimum entry for some vocational courses. You must have an interview before you enrol so you can be placed in the right level.
The average cost for permanent residents and citizens is about $120. There are higher fees for people on other visa types.
