Who can apply for Independent Status?

Any student can apply for independent status but in doing so you must be prepared to undertake responsibility for the following:

  • Enrolment
  • Payment of course and any other related fees and costs
  • Signing consent forms for excursions related to your course of study
  • Adhering to the Institute's Student Code of Conduct
  • Informing the Institute if your personal circumstances change in relation to your independent minor status.

Please note: If you are successful in your application to be classified as an Independent Minor, then this status will only apply for your current enrolment period and for use at Challenger Institute.

Why apply for Independent status?

There are a range of reasons that students may wish to apply for this independent status that may include:

  • My parents/guardians are not involved in decisions relating to my education.
  • I am financially independent and am in a position to fund the costs associated with my course of study.
  • I have been deemed an “independent minor” by Centrelink.
  • My living arrangements are independent of my parents/ guardians.
  • The last school at which I was enrolled designated me to be an “independent minor”.

How do I apply for Independence Status?

  • Complete an application form. The application form also be collected from any campus information desk or you can call the Duty of Care Coordinator for a form to be mailed out to you.
  • Collect the relevant evidence that is required to be submitted with the application form.  Two forms of written evidence are required to support your application.  See application form for examples of evidence.
  • Attending an interview – either face to face or over the phone.  Contact the Duty of Care Coordinator to arrange an interview time.
  • When the assessment is complete you will be informed of the outcome by letter.
