A
ABSTUDY An allowance support scheme for indigenous students studying in secondary or tertiary institutions. ABSTUDY consists of a fortnightly living allowance as well as additional components to help with the costs associated with attending school. Contact Centrelink for further information.
Access course A preparatory, prevocational or bridging course that prepares students for further study, training or employment. Access courses may be customised for groups such as youth at risk, women, people with a disability, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and adults seeking to re-enter the workforce.
Accreditation Accreditation is the formal recognition of a course by the State accrediting body (Training Accreditation Council in WA) in line with the AQTF Standards for State and Territory Course Accrediting Bodies. Accreditation formally recognises qualifications not covered by nationally endorsed Training Packages.

ACEPT Australian Centre for Energy and Process Training
Advanced Diploma A qualification usually requiring a minimum of four Semesters to complete. It requires skill and knowledge of a greater complexity and a higher level than expected at a diploma level.
Advanced Standing Credit granted towards a student's future course from studies successfully completed at Challenger Institute or another registered training organisation. Can also be referred to as an exemption or recognition through pre-arranged RPL/Skills Recognition. Exemption, Recognition or RPL provides an exemption from a particular module or unit of competency. A result of By Advanced Standing appears on the student's transcript.
Apprenticeship An apprenticeships is a structured employment based training program that leads to apprentices becoming qualified tradespersons and gaining a nationally recognised qualification. Apprenticeships are established by the Minister through a Parliamentary process and may be full time, part time or school based. An Apprenticeship normally lasts for 2 years or more depending on the trade.
Articulation agreement A formal agreement between Challenger Institute and other education and training institutions that allows specific programs at one institution to be credited towards direct entry or advanced standing at another
Assessment The process of collecting evidence and making judgements on whether competency has been achieved, or whether specific skills and knowledge have been achieved that will lead to the attainment of competency.
Associate Degree A two year sub-degree qualification accredited against higher education requirements, following year 12 or equivalent, or Certificate III or IV, and positioned alongside an advanced diploma. A shorter higher education qualification offering an exit point at the undergraduate level, or a fully articulated pathway into a bachelor degree for further in-depth study and professional preparation, or articulation into an advanced diploma for specialist industry competencies
Associate Diploma Either an undergraduate or TAFE award requiring two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, study
Auspicing arrangements Auspicing in the vocational education and training (VET) sector involves an organisation entering into partnership with a registered training organisation (RTO) in order to have the training and assessment that it undertakes recognised under the National Training Framework. In such an arrangement, the RTO has responsibility for assuring the quality of the assessments conducted by the other organisation. Thus, the RTO is required to set up systems for monitoring and evaluating assessment processes and judgements about competence. The RTO is also responsible for issuing the qualifications and/or statements of attainment that ensue from that training.
Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) The policy framework that defines qualifications recognised nationally for education and training.
Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) The nationally agreed quality arrangements for the vocational education and training system agreed to by the ANTA Ministerial Council.
AUSTUDY An income support scheme for full-time students aged 25 years and over provided by the Australian Government agency, Centrelink.
Award A recognised certification of achievement or competence which may be granted to a student after completion of all the requirements of a TAFE course
B
Bridging course Training designed to enable a student to take up a new subject or course by covering the gap between the student's existing knowledge and skills and the assumed knowledge of the subject or course.
Business incubator An establishment that offers training in a ‘real-life’ context, i.e. students interact with the public and other business contacts as part of their studies in an industrial or retail environment. Previously known as "live-works".
C
Cadetship Cadetships are usually offered to paid employees who attend a TAFE course as a part of their employment contracts. This requires full-time or part-time study in a relevant discipline interspersed with on-the-job work experience that often requires completion of a Training Record Book to support and develop the cadet's job related and personal skills.
Career Development Adviser A Challenger Institute staff member who provides career development services including counselling prospective and current students of career options and pathways, training processes and employment outcomes.
Career pathway A visual description (usually boxed diagrams or flow charts) of possible careers that can be pursued after gaining particular qualifications and the levels and connections between qualifications for a particular study area.
CareerConnect A free Challenger Institute service aimed at current students and recent graduates which provides assistance with employment preparation, job search and career guidance.
Cluster A set of units that make a cluster set within a course outline.  Part-time students must enrol in all units within a cluster set.
Competency The ability to perform tasks and duties to the standard expected in the workplace.
Contact hours The number of hours that a student will be expected to spend at Challenger Institute attending lectures, tutorials, or practical/laboratory classes.
Core Subject/Unit Core subjects or units are compulsory subjects/units students need to pass in order to successfully complete a particular award/course
Course code A course identifier used for administrative purposes (e.g. C325).
Credit Transfer (TAFE) The recognition of specified learning previously completed in TAFE, within a single Institute or across Institutes. It is granted where the identical TAFE module has previously been successfully completed or a TAFE module deemed to be equivalent has previously been successfully completed. The CIS lists equivalent modules.
CRICOS The Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) is a database of more than 1,200 Australian education institutions. Any education institution that recruits, enrols or teaches overseas students, must be registered on CRICOS.
D
DET Department of Education and Training (WA)
Diploma A qualification usually placing more emphasis on practical skills than on theoretical content. Diplomas are typically two Semesters of full-time study.
E
Elective Units Elective units are non-compulsory course units
Entrance Requirements Entrance requirements are the lowest level of school results you need to be allowed into a full-time course at TAFEWA.
ESL English as a Second Language. English speaking/writing courses aimed at people who are not native English speakers.
ESOS Education Services for Overseas Students. The ESOS Acts and Regulations set out the legal framework for the delivery of education to overseas students.
ETI Education & Training International
E-training Online-based training for part or all of a course
Exemption Also known as Skills Recognition, Trade Recognition or Recognised Prior Learning (RPL)
F
FFS Fee for Service. Normally refers to Fee for Service (or "commercial") courses/programs. A fee for service course/program is a commercial activity that is not funded through the Government fund sources. Fees payable on fee for Service courses/programs are charged on a cost recovery basis and no fee exemptions apply.
Financial hardship If a student is unable to pay his/her full fees on the day of enrolment, he/she can request a "Financial Hardship" interview to access eligibility for a fees payment agreement (instalment plan).
Flexible Delivery Training that generally allows the student to work at their own pace in their own time, often including on-line and off-campus learning. Involves a range of approaches that provides education and training, giving learners greater choice of when, where and how they learn e.g. distance education, mixed-mode delivery, online education, self-paced learning or self-directed learning.
FPA Is short for "Fees Payment Agreement". An FPA is an instalment plan where students who have a valid concession card from Centrelink are eligible to pay their tuition/course fees on an instalment plan.
Full-time student For eligibility for Centrelink's "Youth Allowance" purposes, a "Full-time" student is one who is doing at least 75% of the full-time workload of a course or minimum of 15 hours a week of face-to-face study.
Full-time student (International) International Students must ensure that they study a full time load to comply with the requirements set out in the ESOS Act & the requirements of their Student visa. A full-time study load is normally set at 20 hours of contact per week or 80% of their enrolled course.
G
Graduand A diploma or advanced student but has not been formally awarded the qualification.
Graduate One who has received an academic degree or diploma
I
Industry Training Centre An establishment within Challenger TAFE that focuses on delivering training for particular areas of business e.g. Automotive Technology Skills Centre

Learning Resource Centre The Learning Resource Centre at Challenger TAFE is also known as Library or Library Resource Centre
Lecture A class in which an academic staff member gives formal instruction in the subject matter for students enrolled in that unit.
Library The library at Challenger TAFE is also known as Learning Resource Centre or Library Resource Centre

Offer letter Offer letters are issued by TAFE Admissions to mainstream students and Education & Training International (ETI) for International students. Note for Mainstream Students: You must enrol and pay your fees to confirm your acceptance of the offer before the deadline stipulated on your offer letter. Failure to do so will mean that your offer of a place will lapse and may be re-offered to another student. Note for International Students: The places available in some programs are extremely limited and the offer letter does not guarantee a place will be available at the time of paying your course fees. International Students or their agents are advised to contact the Admissions Office at Challenger TAFE to confirm that there are still places available prior to paying tuition fees for the program. Places will be confirmed based on the date payment is received.
Online Enrolment A web-based facility available through Challenger TAFE’s website that enables all students (both commencing and continuing) to complete the required enrolment procedures. Note: You must have a valid credit card to enrol via this method.
P
Part-time student A student who attends Challenger TAFE for less than 75% of a standard full-time credit point load. Part-time study is not a reflection of the time of day classes are held.
Plagiarism The unauthorised use or close imitation of the unique language, ideas, concepts or thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work. In a training/academic environment plagiarism is considered fraud and offenders can be subject to censure.
Pre-requisite Experience, education or qualifications that are required to be considered for entry into a course
PRISMS The Provider Registration and International Students Management System (PRISMS), is a secure computer system that is the information source for CRICOS.
Prospective student A person who has made enquiries about a course of study but is not yet enrolled for that particular course. This includes people who may have made an application for admission.
Q
Qualification The formal certification issued by an RTO under the AQF confirming that a person has achieved all the requirements for a qualification as specified in a national Training Package or in an AQF course.
R
Recognition A broad term that means recognition of competencies currently held, regardless of how, when or where the learning TAFE Credit Transfer and Mutual Recognition.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) (see also Skills/Trade Recognition & Exemption). The acknowledgment of a person's current skills and knowledge acquired through previous education, training, work or life experience. In TAFE this type of recognition encompasses all recognition where either formal recognition arrangements have not been completed or where Mutual Recognition does not apply. Challenger TAFE offers RPL assessments across most study areas from Certificate III to Advanced Diploma level.
Registered Training Organisation (RTO) A training organisation formally approved, recognised and registered by a State or a Territory registering body. Each TAFE Institute has RTO status.
Resource Fees Resource fee covers materials purchased by Challenger TAFE to be consumed or transformed by students in the course of instruction. The resource fee also covers internet charges and other services utilised by the students in the course of instruction. Any equipment that will be retained by the student as his or her own personal property must be purchased separately by the student. Resource fees can vary from $50 to $3,000 according to the course a student is enrolled in.
Result transfer Recognition through TAFE Credit Transfer, which results in an exemption from a particular module, subject or unit of competency. Where the student is exempted from the same TAFE unit for which they have a previous result (or a unit deemed by a TAFE Division to be equivalent to another TAFE unit) Pass or Graded Result appears on the student's transcript. Result transfer is not granted for Mutual Recognition, Pre-arranged RPL or RPL.

Safety Net Application A safety net application is a "wait list" process for consideration of entry into courses after close of formal applications and enrolment processes.
SAL School Apprenticeship Link. Training program aimed at school-aged students who have completed Year 10 and are interested in pursuing an apprenticeship
SCH Student Contact Hours
School-leaver A person who has completed high school at the end of the year consecutive to the year of commencement at TAFE or university.
Selection Criteria Selection criteria are academic and other criteria, which are used to score eligible applicants competing for entry into a course where there are more applications than places available for a course. E.g. work experience, industry involvement and current and previous employment.
Semester A designated period of weeks in which the program of study and instruction for a unit or award course is undertaken (usually around 16 weeks). One Semester includes two Terms and there are two Semesters per calendar year.
Skills Recognition (see also Recognition of Prior Learning & Exemption). The acknowledgment of a person's current skills and knowledge acquired through previous education, training, work or life experience. In TAFE this type of recognition encompasses all recognition where either formal recognition arrangements have not been completed or where Mutual Recognition does not apply. Statement of Attainment A formal document listing units of competency or TAFE modules/subjects achieved towards a qualification under the AQF.
Subject Also know as "unit" or "module". Subjects/Units/Modules are a set of classes run over a teaching period providing instruction on a particular subject matter . A Subject/Unit/Module generally takes three or four class contact hours per week. A Subject/Unit/Module may be designated as core or elective.

TAFEWA TAFEWA is not a College in itself, but is the collective term for all TAFE colleges across Western Australia (WA). Under the label TAFEWA the state is divided up into regions which have a TAFE College that services a particular area, with some TAFE Colleges having more than one Campus location. TER Tertiary Entrance Rank
Term A designated period of weeks in which the program of study and instruction for a unit or award course is undertaken (usually around 10 weeks). There are normally two terms in one semester or four terms per calendar year.
Traineeships A traineeship is a formal training agreement between an employer and a trainee, usually lasting 12 months or more. Traineesships provide structured on and off the job training that leads to a nationally recognised qualifications. Traineeships may be full time, part time or school based.
Transferability The ability of the skills and knowledge acquired to be applied outside the specific context in which they were learned i.e. skills and knowledge learnt at TAFE are easily applied in the workplace with little or no additional training.
U
Unit of Competency A competency standard that specifies the knowledge and skill an individual needs to perform their job to the required industry standard. Units of competency have seven components including unit code, unit title, elements of competency, performance criteria, range of variables and evidence guide. See also Subject

VET Vocational Education and Training
VETfS/VETiS Vocational Education and Training for/in Schools. Training opportunities aimed at school-aged students, especially Years 10, 11 and 12
W
Workplace Assessment The gathering and judging of evidence during normal work activities in order to determine whether a required competency standard has been achieved. Often conducted as an upfront assessment to identify existing skills in relation to training needs, or as an assessment independent of training to recognise existing skills for purposes of issuing a qualification or statement of attainment.
